Spiders Web – Crawler Bots
When we talk about spiders on the web we don’t mean that ones which are spinning webs in the server room cupboard. Spiders are also known as bots and they gather information about websites on the internet and pass that information back to a search engine, like Google, Bing and Yahoo, in order to accumulate and rate those sites so they can be listed in the search engine results pages when users search.
How Do They Work?
The spiders are constantly crawling the web for new and updated information. In effect, they are trying to look at everything online and then use many factors to rate how credible and valuable that resource is. Google use something called a Page Rank (PR) to summarize in one number how important a page is. It’s a scale from 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest and most credible site.
The spiders go back to high PR sites more often because thy are more likely yo have new information on them. From this point they are able to crawl through all of the links on the homepage of that site, through the entire site. They will also follow links to other websites which are linked to from this main site. Therefore, getting links on high PR sites is valuable to the site they are linking to. New sites to the internet might take a while to get crawled by the spiders because they won’t have any links pointing to them.
How to Increase Page Rank
The aim for any SEO is to increase the value of their website and/or specific pages on their site so that they can get higher rankings in the search engine results pages and therefore more clicks by users. Common ways to increase your page rank are:
- Get linked to from other sites, particularly high PR sites
- Use Facebook to build up a community of people who link to your site
- Tweet links to the site and build a community that way, just like Facebook
- Write valuable content for readers so that it gets shared around the internet and your site increases in popularity
They are just some of the ways in which you can try to improve your page rank.
